About the Role

Job Specific Duties
The specific functions of the Hospitality Services General Manager encompass a wide variety of roles and responsibilities. It is important to note that not all functions and duties are contained within this definition, and the position itself will be ever-changing and adaptive. Nevertheless, roles and responsibilities allocated to the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Compliance and Policies:
o Operate in accordance with the Vision, Mission, and Guiding Principles, by-laws, and policies of the Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union.
o Ensure all hospitality services functions are compliant with Health & Safety policies and procedures as outlined by the Students’ Union and relevant legislation (OHSA, WHMIS, AODA).

POSITION DESCRIPTION
o Remain knowledgeable in Alcohol and Gaming Commission policies and liquor license laws and regulations.
o Stay well-versed in hospitality services policies, procedures, risk management, and legal requirements to ensure best practices.

• Operational Management:
o Support department initiatives and strategies as prescribed by the Executive Leadership team or delegated by the Director, Finance & Operations.
o Maintain professional working relationships with all internal and external members and partners.
o Oversee the maintenance of electronic and hard copy files according to department and organization-specific guidelines.
o Ensure proper handling and maintenance of Students’ Union assets, property, and resources.

• Financial Management:
o Construct and maintain the annual budget for the Waterloo Hospitality Services department.
o Monitor costs including liquor, beer, bar supplies, and food.
o Provide direction and support to the Kitchen Manager in developing menu pricing.
o Regularly audit cash handling systems, financial statements, and inventory levels.

• Strategic Planning and Innovation:
o Oversee the development of goals and objectives for both short- and long-term plans.
o Facilitate the coordination and monitoring of Wilf’s Restaurant operations.
o Implement constant innovation and improvement to the structure, operations, products, guest services, and facilities.

• Leadership and Team Support:
o Lead and provide direction to the Wilf’s Restaurant Management Team.
o Support the Hospitality Services Team in soliciting feedback from students and liaising with the Marketing department.
o Provide support for administrative functions including hiring, training, payroll, and performance evaluations.
o Collaborate with the Venue Manager and the Brantford Hospitality Manager to create an annual marketing plan.

• Communication and Coordination:
o Provide regular communications to all levels of the organization regarding operations.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
o Supervise daily performance and assist in job tasks during busy periods and training.

• Additional Responsibilities:
o Ensure coverage and support among the Hospitality Services General Manager, Venue Manager, and Brantford Hospitality Manager during absences and busy periods.
o Remain current and knowledgeable with operational systems (point-of-sale, draught services, etc.).
o Other duties as assigned by the Director, Finance & Operations.

WORKING CONDITIONS & TIME COMMITMENT:
• Full-time position, with the expectation to work 40hrs per week;
• Traditional hours of operation for Wilf’s Restaurant & Bar and The Turret are 11:00am to 11:00pm, 6 days a week;
• Due to the nature of the hospitality services industry it should be noted that hours may vary, often being irregular. Working hours will reflect the busiest business periods and be mutually agreed upon with the Director, Finance & Operations;
• Evening and weekend hours are to be expected;
• The Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union operates on both the Waterloo and Brantford campuses, therefore the employee may be required to maintain duties on both campuses as required; and

• Work will mainly be completed moving around the establishments, or seated at a desk using a computer, and therefore the following physical demands are expected:
o Walking and standing as a major job function;
o Carry and transport objects of various sizes up to a maximum of 25 lbs;
o Pushing or pulling contents that weigh a maximum of 75 lbs; and
o Stretching, reaching, bending, stooping, crouching and/or kneeling for short periods of time.

REPORTS TO: Director, Finance & Operations

EXPERIENCE: Managing staff in a hospitality environment

EDUCATION: Undergraduate degree or equivalent

SKILL SET: Project management, risk management, operational controls, people management and experience working within Student Associations an asset

LOCATION: Waterloo campus


Summary

The Hospitality Services department oversees all hospitality operations of the Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union on the Waterloo and Brantford campuses. Our operations consist of Wilf’s Restaurant & Bar and The Turret on the Waterloo campus, and The Belmont and Golden Grounds Coffee House on the Brantford campus. Along with the daily aspects of restaurant and bar operations, a variety of catering and special events are held within these establishments.


The Hospitality Services General Manager will develop and oversee the comprehensive operational and administrative portfolio of Wilf’s Restaurant within the Hospitality Services department of the Students’ Union. Their focus will be on creating and maintaining a student-focused food program, providing financial support for the organization, upholding sector-wide best practices, aiding in the development of short- and long-term strategies, and acting as a direct resource when liaising with the University and external partners. The incumbent will be highly motivated to work in a fast-paced environment, be extremely well-organized, detail-oriented, have strong interpersonal skills, and excellent time management skills.
